Condensation isn’t just an issue that can appear on you’re A/C Unit, because condensation on your water heater is just as bad, condensation around the burner of your unit can cause a “crackling” or “popping” sound
If your water heater is making any of these noises this doesn’t necessarily mean that your water heater is damaged or needs replacement, but I would keep an eye or an ear out for these sounds becoming worse, louder or more persistent so damage is avoidable.
