Flush Your Water Heater To Make It Last For Decades, Even With Hard Water In San Antonio
Even with the hard water in San Antonio, you can make your water heater last for DECADES by performing a water heater flush.
Did you know that you have to have maintenance performed on your water heater? Yep, many people in San Antonio don’t know this.
San Antonio has very hard water due to calcium and lime in the Edward’s Aquifer which is where our drinking water comes from. How hard is the water in San Antonio Texas?
San Antonio recent water testing shows San Antonio Texas at 357 mg/L or 21 gpg. This is considered “extremely hard water.” Hard water in San Antonio continues to be a challenge for home owners and their water heaters.
Flushing your water heater is very important just like getting an oil change for your car. It’s amazing how quickly sediment accumulates inside your water heater, killing it from the inside out!
How a water heater flush works and how often should I flush out my water heater?
The longer your water heater goes without a drain and flush, the more sediment, calcium, lime and other minerals will accumulate at the bottom of the tank. This sediment looks like a white or gray, flaky sand. Eventually, this causes scaling which means it will stick to inside of your tank and the water heater heating elements. Have you noticed that hard, white colored mineral buildup on your sink faucets and shower heads? That’s referred to as “scale.” Enough of that in your water heater’s tank and you could start running into some significant issues:
Reduced water heating efficiency: As hard water scale collects at the bottom of your water heater tank, your water heater will become less effective at heating the water in the tank. This means it will take more energy (more gas or more electricity) to heat your water to the desired temperature. This increases your energy bill and believe me, it takes a LOT of energy to heat your water and KEEP it hot all day and all night.
Corrosion: If your water heater goes long enough without a good water heater flush, you could also have corrosion eating away the inside of your water heater tank itself, weakening its structural integrity. This is especially true with gas water heaters. On a gas water heater, there’s a flame that heats the botttom of your tank to heat your water. If there’s sandy sediment on the bottom of your tank, the gas flames are heating the sediment instead of your water and this destroys the bottom of your tank. This is why we see so many gas water heaters rupture and hot water just pours out of the bottom of the tank. This is a HUGE problem if your water heater is located in your attic.
Safety: Your water heater has a crucial pressure-relief valve that prevents pressure from building up in the tank. Scaling can block this valve which can cause your water heater to accumulate too much pressure and cause a catastrophic failure of your tank. Again, if your water heater is located in your attic, this could be a huge issue.
Here’s the scoop: you need to have your water heater flushed regularly and make sure it’s done right. The cost is minimal but it can save you a lot of trouble down the road.
